Quick process at FORCE-Dantest CERT for Akzo Nobel Salt.
If you put salt on your egg in the morning, it has most probably been produced by Akzo Nobel Salt A/S. The same applies to the road salt to thaw the ice in winter. And the salt that the food industry uses for preservation and flavour. And the salt that is an important raw material in the production of numerous other industries.
CO2 Quota Act
The company, beautifully located near Mariager Fjord, is one of the leading salt producers in the world. The production plant in Denmark has a capacity of 70 tonnes of salt per hour and even though Akzo Nobel Salt has one of the most energy efficient plants in the world, it takes significant amounts of energy to produce salt. For this purpose, the company has one of the largest industrial power plants in Denmark, big enough to supply electricity to 70,000 residences. The effect of the power plant by far exceeds 20 MW and therefore it is subject to the CO2 Quota Act.
”The purpose of the quota scheme is to reduce emission of CO2. The companies that are subject to the quota scheme are allocated a quota for CO2 emissions from 2005-2007. In addition, an independent body must verify their statement of emission every year. In Denmark, just under 400 production units are subject to the Quota Act, including Akzo Nobel Salt which has chosen us to perform the verification”, says the leading verifier at FORCE-Dantest CERT, Mogens Simonsen.
Accredited by DANAK
FORCE-Dantest CERT, which is FORCE Technology’s independent certification body, uses internal specialists – in this case energy specialists with extensive knowledge of energy plants, management systems and audit processes. FORCE-Dantest CERT is accredited by DANAK which is the Danish agency responsible for verification accreditation pursuant to the CO2 Quota Act.
”All the companies included in the quota scheme have drawn up a plan for the Danish Energy Authority on how they measure and register e.g. their consumption of fuel and energy. Our task in connection with verification is simply to check whether the plans are followed and whether the documentation systems are valid”, says Mogens Simonsen.
Verifications and certifications may be a necessary, but lengthy process for a company to go through, but this is not the case at Akzo Nobel Salt. ”We are satisfied with the quick process performed by FORCE-Dantest CERT. We have experienced an efficient process with focus on the important areas. We are pleased about that. And we are also pleased to find that we already had the required documentation as we have focused on our energy consumption for many years”, says Process Engineer Christian Schultz-Møller from Akzo Nobel in Mariager.
