Resistor Controlled Cathodic Protection

RCP anodes prevent localised corrosion of stainless steel in chlorinated seawater and produced water systems. RCP is a reliable and robust means of internal corrosion protection, also against galvanic interactions. This increases the operational window of lower grade stainless steels.

The resulting advantages are typically more readily available materials, simpler welding procedures and lower material costs. RCP has been successfully applied for more than 10 years, and in excess of 4000 anodes have been installed.

RCP anode installed on a blind flange.

Applications and Advantages

  • RCP expands the operating parameter window (temperature, chlorine level) for stainless steels in piping systems like seawater, produced water, firewater, heat exchangers, etc.
  • RCP prevents localised galvanic corrosion in couplings between different alloys, e.g between stainless steels and yellow alloys
  • RCP provides low anode consumption rate and long anode lives.

Our simulation program, RCPSim, is based on an element method, and is used to design and optimise the RCP system. This program utilises real life empirical values that have been collected as part of the development and delivery of RCP.
